'Twas the very first night I ever stepped in-front of a microphone - in a "formal" setting - and was expected to be (at least a little bit) funny.
Yep! It took place in the banquet-room of the New Chinatown restaurant in Albuquerque, NM; in front of approximately 45-50 audience members - in fact, it was BEFORE that city even had a full-time comedy club! (Laffs didn't materialize until five or six months later...)
I'm glad there is no known recording of THAT first set - it would be so painful to watch. I'm pretty sure I only got a few "polite" chuckles from that crowd - in the 3-4 (extremely looong) minutes I was onstage (or, in this case; "on-carpet.) in front of them!
Ronn Perea was there - so was William Resnik - and I'm fairly certain that Neil Edwards, Bob Asta & Marc Maron were, too! Perhaps, Weely Cordova and Alpine Bob were there - however, I haven't stayed in-touch with them since the "old days."
Twenty-eight years? Wow. It's been a helluva ride, kids! Some of that "ride" has been bumpy - and I NEVER thought on that first night that it was something I'd be doing to earn a living - but, it's been satisfying, nonetheless!
Here's to MANY more laughs, my friends - God bless you all!
